Importing Manuscripts from Word or Google Docs

If your book is already started in another word processor, there is no need to copy and paste manually: you can import files directly via drag and drop.

  1. 1

Open your book project in Storello.

  2. 2

Navigate to the Files section in the project menu.

  3. 3

Drag and drop your .docx or markdown files directly into the project window — or click Upload Files.

  4. 4

You can also drag an entire folder containing chapter files.

  5. 5

Reorder your chapters into chronological sequence by dragging cards in the sidebar.

What to Check After Importing

  • Chapter Order — files may sort alphabetically rather than narratively; drag cards to reorder.
  • Titles — file names become chapter titles and populate your table of contents when exporting.
  • Headings — internal heading tags populate the chapter structure panel: Chapter Structure.
  • Complex Layouts — tables, columns, and footnote markers from Word should be reviewed for clean formatting.

If Your Manuscript is One Single Long File

Upload the single document, then split it into chapters inside Storello: create new chapter files and move text segments over. Organizing by chapters unlocks Storello’s full power: live progress tracking, scene reordering, and targeted exports.

Always keep your original source file backed up. Never delete your previous draft copy until you have verified your imported project.
